The Typrwriter

Leroy Anderson (1908-1975) was an American composer of short, light concert pieces; many of which were introduced by the Boston Pops Orchestra under the direction of Arthur Fiedler.

As with all his other compositions, Leroy Anderson wrote The Typewriter for orchestra, completing the work on October 9, 1950. This particular orchestration was performed in a June 12, 2011 concert by members of the National Orchestra and Chorus of Spain in Madrid. The (typewriter) soloist is Alfredo Anaya.

This is for all us ancients who remember what a typewriter was!

Wasted Time

So, yeah, I was looking at this "Rock Stars Then and Now" page. And no, I'm not providing the link. I'm embarrassed to have looked at the whole thing and wasted all that time, I'm not enabling you to do it, so just forget it.

But being a blogger, I figured at least I could make SOME use out of the wasted time and destroyed brain-cells...

First. Seriously. This should not be allowed to happen. There ought to be a law. And I mostly HATE laws. This, my darlings, is Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane. The uber-famous singer of White Rabbit. I don't want my female Rock icons to become grey-haired grannies. When this happens, R&R dies a little:

Next is someone quite the opposite. Joan Jett is just as cool looking today as she was back in the day. Of course, she is not as old as Grace, but still...

The third is a case of the older guy looking cooler than the younger version. I love James Hetfield of Metallica, but honestly, his younger self always reminds me of the Cowardly Lion. Makes it hard to take him seriously. He looks tougher and cooler the older he gets. He totally owns it.

So...that's the best I can salvage out of that half an hour I'll never get back.

R.I.P. Andrew Breitbart

Goddamnit! This is what I've been trying to say!

We have to make "conservatism" cool.

And, frankly, my dear, that probably means using a different label!

Breitbart wanted Punk Rock Republicans.

I want Metal-Head Republicans. They play better.

Heavy Metal Love

Was just reading about the band, Motorhead, and I came across this regarding their album Ace of Spades...

"Ace of Spades, by Motorhead, is the perfect music to invade Czechoslovakia by."

—Heavy Metal Magazine

Definitely should be on your list of "must haves".

Rehab...

I'd heard of this song, but never actually heard it. Turns out, I love it. She kills it...and she so cute while she does it.

All the same, you can't help thinking that if she'd just said "yes, yes, yes", she might be alive today.

"I go back to black..."

I'm sure you're all hipper than I and have seen this before, but seriously, this is fierce...

You Didn't Need Tarot Cards to See This Coming

Amy Winehouse 's death came as a complete shock...

...to absolutely no one.

Sad that.

I was shocked, however, to learn she was only 27-years-old.

It feels like I've been reading about her drug and alcohol problems for longer than that. Not to mentioned how she looked recently.

I don't know her music, but you couldn't fail to hear about her lifestyle. What a waste. What a shame.

Weren't there any adults in her life that could have prevented this?

[A little while later...]

How could this happen?

I said I didn't know her music (above)...so I checked it out since...and OMG...she's amazing. The mess that was her little public self kept me from taking her seriously enough to even check out her music. I'm sorry it took her death to motivate me...but I'm glad I'll have her music to listen to.

But there will never be more...and that's such a shame.

I ordered her two albums, Frank and Back to Black from Amazon just now. They "usually ship within 6 - 12 days"...??

Is there a rush on her music, do you suppose? Or just the opposite - they don't get enough orders...so they don't keep them in stock?

Either way...it's all such a sad, if predictable, thing.

R.I.P.,  kid. Better luck in the new place.

Did you know he Sang?

According to All-Music-Guide Link Wray came back from the Korean War with only one lung and his doctor told him to let his brother do the singing. Apparently, he mostly listened...and stuck to guitar. But here's a vid of him singing. He's a good rock singer.

I did not know that.

Guitar Hero!

AlphaDog recommended this. OMG. If you play guitar, get ready to feel awe. If you don't play guitar, same same.

Music and the Central Nervous System

I've been thinking about why some music drives me crazy good, and other music drives me crazy bad. And why the same music has the opposite effect on other people.

My sister loves The Stranglers, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. She thinks they ROCK.

Me?  meh...not so much.

I think it might be that certain music effects our central nervous system.

Music that makes my sister rock leaves me cold, and the stuff that makes ME rock is too much, and too repetitive for her.

My rocket scientist friend (yeah, seriously) likes open ended music that (to me) goes nowhere...I like music that is simple and resolves itself in a few bars. He finds it boring.

Why?

I think that our Central Nervous System determines what music "feels good".

I don't think it's a matter of taste. I think it's a matter of science...of physiology.

I think that's why some people adore pop music or emo-angsty-poor-me-teen-age music and why some of us more or less hate it.

Here's my current playlist:

Peter Gunn    The Ventures   (Guitar only; no horns!)
Switchblade    Link Wray
Ramrod/Fanny Mae    Duane Eddy
Rebel Rouser/Ramrod    Duane Eddy
Guitar Boogie Shuffle    Duane Eddy - The Ventures
Roadhouse Boogie    Duane Eddy
Honky Tonk    Duane Eddy
I Fought The Law    Duane Eddy - The Ventures
Rockabilly Holiday    Duane Eddy
Peter Gunn    Duane Eddy
Sleep Walk    Duane Eddy
Rumble  Link Wray And His Ray Men
Apache    Shadows
Apache    The Ventures
I call  it "Guitar Heroes"

Yeah, I know there are more, but I want the seminal rock musicians; the ones who inspired the rest.

Oh...Chuck Berry!  Will add...!

Feel free to add to the list.

Can I "Beat" This to Death?

Yeah, man, of course the pun is intended!

Here is a vid of the Ventures, with Mel Taylor, my hero, and Max Weinberg—who eventually became the drummer for Bruce Springsteen's E. Street Band, and studio band leader for Conan O'Brien—also on drums.

Weinberg is good, obviously, but side by side like this, you can see the "in-a-class-by-himself-ness" of Taylor and his effortless grace.

I'll give Weinberg this, though, he's definitely prettier.

The Gunslinger

Van and I are having a pissing contest intellectual discussion about whose badder on the Ventures' video Wipe Out ( couple of posts below)...the drummer or the bass player.

I say the drummer. He says the bass player. To bolster my side I submit this:

Mel Taylor, Venture's drummer...and one of all-time greatest drum solos...

It's pretty long, but watch how he 'kisses' those drums with the sticks. He's so amazingly fast at the same time he's so light-handed. It's just amazing. And wait till you see him play the bass with his sticks!

The bass player, good as he is, cannot play the drums with his ax.

I'm just sayin'...

Music - Getting Through the Psychosis

I've talked a little about the Big Crazy I fell into when I quit smoking. It's more or less beginning to subside now...over a year later. (June 14...one-year anniversary), but some changes are going to be permanent.

I can breathe better, I can sing again, and slightly higher than last time I could do it at all.

And I'm in love with music again. Seriously,  love, like when I was a kid.

Every moment in the car I've got the stereo blasting; and at home, too, when I'm doing stuff that doesn't take concentration. I haven't been like that since my late 20's, when I was majoring in Radio & Television (officially:  "Broadcast Communication Arts")  at San Francisco State University, and was a disc jockey at the college station.

My DJ name was supposed to be Roxy Derringer.  But I always opened the show with the song "Roxy Roller", and  it didn't take before that's what everyone called me. Ah well... I was a little old for the "bubble gum on her knees..." but what the hell. I went with it.

Anyway...one of my new found musical passions is Zydeco! Man, I'm completely in love with the whole traditional, accordion-fiddle-French thing. I'm even toying with taking Rosetta Stone French just so I can talk Cajun.

My playlist includes these artists. (If you've got suggestions of songs and artists, please let me know in the comments!):

The Mudbugs
Lynn August and the Hot August Knights
Zachary Richard
Zydeco Force
Geno Delafose
Doug Kershaw

This is some seriously good-time, happy-time music. I mean it. You can't feel bad, stay mad, or feel sad listening to this stuff. It is absolutely "Laissez le bon temps rouler" ("Let the good times roll") music.

See....French.  As the Urban Dictionary says, "it strongly conveys the  joie de vivre (joy of living)..."

Uh-huh.

Here is an amazing tune that the JuJu Man turned me onto on his blog. (Click through to the video - but not until you finish reading this post, of course!)

It's The Ventures playing Peter Gunn, but—check it out—with only guitars; no sax. When you hear it you'll recognize how different it is than the usual version. And the guitar is great. It is a ROCKIN' tune.

Unfortunately, the album it's on, New Depth, is no longer available, so you can't get a copy of it. I mean, there is not a copy of this song ANYWHERE!  But I did some research, 'cause I had to have it on my ipod, etc. So in a comment on the post, I explain how to extract the mp3 from the YouTube video, so you can have a portable audio version you can play anywhere.

Trust me, you're gonna want one.

You will not be able to sit still while listening to this song.

Don't.  Even. Try.  You'll get, like, some kind of stress fracture, Dude.

Be sure and turn it WAY UP.

Duane Eddy was a guest on this Ventures' album, which made me go check his old stuff out. And holy shit! That's some badass twangy guitar hero stuff, man: Ramrod, Rebel Rouser, Honky Tonk...et all.
Driving is going to be even more fun now.

The only problem is, this rockin' music makes me drive way fast. It's either gonna be the death of me, or land me in jail...

But what a way to go.

Here's the website of Rench, the man whose music is on video in the last post. He calls it "Dirty Low Down Honky Tonk with Mad Beats". I like it.

Featuring: GangstaGrass. Seriously.

The Picture that Goes with the Song...

Hot Sam Winchester - (character from TV's SUPERNATURAL)  having "sink sex" in a public bathroom with a random stranger. This would be "soulless Sam"....acting completely out of character, of course...)

Pretty Hot Tune...
