Music and the Central Nervous System

I've been thinking about why some music drives me crazy good, and other music drives me crazy bad. And why the same music has the opposite effect on other people.

My sister loves The Stranglers, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. She thinks they ROCK.

Me?  meh...not so much.

I think it might be that certain music effects our central nervous system.

Music that makes my sister rock leaves me cold, and the stuff that makes ME rock is too much, and too repetitive for her.

My rocket scientist friend (yeah, seriously) likes open ended music that (to me) goes nowhere...I like music that is simple and resolves itself in a few bars. He finds it boring.

Why?

I think that our Central Nervous System determines what music "feels good".

I don't think it's a matter of taste. I think it's a matter of science...of physiology.

I think that's why some people adore pop music or emo-angsty-poor-me-teen-age music and why some of us more or less hate it.

Here's my current playlist:

Peter Gunn    The Ventures   (Guitar only; no horns!)
Switchblade    Link Wray
Ramrod/Fanny Mae    Duane Eddy
Rebel Rouser/Ramrod    Duane Eddy
Guitar Boogie Shuffle    Duane Eddy - The Ventures
Roadhouse Boogie    Duane Eddy
Honky Tonk    Duane Eddy
I Fought The Law    Duane Eddy - The Ventures
Rockabilly Holiday    Duane Eddy
Peter Gunn    Duane Eddy
Sleep Walk    Duane Eddy
Rumble  Link Wray And His Ray Men
Apache    Shadows
Apache    The Ventures
I call  it "Guitar Heroes"

Yeah, I know there are more, but I want the seminal rock musicians; the ones who inspired the rest.

Oh...Chuck Berry!  Will add...!

Feel free to add to the list.

The Gunslinger
