"The man who damns money has obtained it dishonorably; the man who respects it has earned it."
"Run for your life from any man who tells you that money is evil. That sentence is the leper's bell of an approaching looter. So long as men live together on earth and need means to deal with one another—their only substitute, if they abandon money, is the muzzle of a gun."
"Then you will see the rise of the men of the double standard—the men who live by force, yet count on those who live by trade to create the value of their looted money—the men who are the hitchhikers of virtue...Such looters believe it safe to rob defenseless once they've passed a law to disarm them. But their loot becomes the magnet for other looters, who get it from them as they got it. Then the race goes, not to the ablest at production, but to those most ruthless at brutality.
When force is the standard, the murderer wins over the pickpocket. And then that society vanishes, in a spread of ruins and slaughter."
"Do you wish to know whether that day is coming?...When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion—when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing—when you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors—when you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws don't protect you against them, but protect them against you—when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice—you may know that your society is doomed."

She had one heck of a crystal ball, didn't she? Amazing what keeping your thoughts connected to reality can do for you.
ReplyDeleteHonestly? Right now all it's doing is scaring the crap out of me.
ReplyDeleteOh I hear you.
ReplyDeleteStill though, there is a certain hubris to our thinking that we know all the bad things that are going to happen, just because we have grasped the principles involved - or rather, thinking that the principles we've grasped, are all of the principles involved (Just ask Oedipus (Frued's idiocies aside), making snap decisions about impending doom can be dangerous).
Tea Parties won't do much in and of themselves of course, but they may yet remind us that we the people are still here, and we may yet have something to say about where we are headed.
Not a lot of hope perhaps, still... anyone making book way back when in 1773, probably wouldn't have given those Boston Injun's much of a hope either.
BTW, how'd you like the Seal's '21st century' adaptation to "Pirate + Rope + Yardarm = Problem Solved"? I'll accept "Pirate + Seal + Sniper Rifle = Problem Solved"!
;-)
I've predicted a second American civil war (or would that be a revolution?) within the next three years.
ReplyDeleteI must say The Obamanation is doing everything he can to start one.
Interesting that The Messiah used considerable Lincoln metaphor in his takeover of the executive office on January 20th...
Could it be The Anti-Christ knows that civil war is inevitable and actually looks forward to it?
Hmmm?
