It Ain't My Fault, Bro

Wow...for a "post-racial" candidate, Obie sure is stirring up a lot of racism.

By which I mean the black on white variety.

To some soft-heads this may come as a surpirse, of course. But if you've had even half an eye open for the last 20 years it's entirely predictable.

I've been pissed off for ages by Big Media's ignoring the habitual victimizing of whites by black criminals, and the whining and blackmail of race hustlers attacking individuals, organizations, and businesses. I've been offended by black "comics" whose entire schtick is bad-mouthing whites while hyping how hip blacks are. I'm disgusted by the parade of supercilious blacks lecturing me on why everything that's wrong in the "black community" is my fault.

You know what? I'm not responsible for black ignorance, black illiteracy, black illegitimacy, black poverty, black crime, black incarceration rates, black disease, black inarticulateness, black disenfranchisement, black rage, black violence, black drop-out rates, black helplessness, black dependency, black ghettos, or black failure.

And I've completely had it.

I didn't start out a racist. And I don't hate all black people. But I'll tell you what...this shit ain't helpin'.

  3. Of course it's your fault, you're white! Didn't you get the memo?

  4. I'm sure we disagree, but I would say it's every American's responsibility to see that we maintain equality for all Citizens. Especially when it comes to education, literacy, poverty, criminal prosecution, etc. Regardless of race.

  5. Jag, what is your definition of "equality"...and what, exactly, do you think "every American" ought to do to maintain it for all citizens?

It's a nice sentiment if you don't think it through, but you're implying that we should take some action...but not saying what.

For at least the last 50 years, at a cost of billions of collars, this country has tried to "raise up" poor blacks and bring them into the mainstream. Taxpayer citizens have sanctioned and paid for full integration, welfare, food stamps, free housing, free medical care, free education, special school programs, special after-school programs, summer jobs programs, race-based scholarships, urban development, affirmative action...and an untold host of other programs aimed specifically at helping blacks succeed.

—And let us not forget...many have. And those who have were the ones willing to take advantage of those open doors, apply themselves, work hard, practice discipline...and all the other virtues of self-starters and the successful.

Yet, there are many more who are still crying and whining and demanding more, blaming white people for their failure.

Is there no end to my responsibility for the personal decisions of others not to attend school? Not to apply oneself to learning? Not to learn to read? To join a gang? To have sex and children as unmarried teenagers? To NOT raise children with discipline and morals and limits and boundries so they don't repreat the same mistakes? To believe that being educated, well-read, well-spoken, well-mannered and successful is acting "white"?

What more do you suggest we do, exactly?

Where, exactly does MY responsibility end, and THEIR individual responsibility begin?

Or are they so inferior that we cannot expect them to gain equality on their own merits, but we must patronize and condescend to let them "feel" equal, while we do everything for them.

Is THAT not the most racist behavior and attitude of all?

  6. Sorry GS - I didn't mean to be terse or to goad you. I was trying to say that I think the best course in our country is just to bring everyone up to the same standard and stop worrying so much about race, family income, etc. Some for reasons you describe - how can we define equality legally? After a certain point it becomes impossible to say "well now Blacks have been compensated for slavery." America needs to start focusing on everybody - there are problems in education, for example, that affect all Americans - we need to stop focusing on race and start focusing on all of our kids.

There's no end to anyone's responsibility for their fellow man - not to say there's always something you can do about it or that you should sacrifice your own life completely.

That's what I was trying to say.

I'm beginning to think this whole dialog on race has become illusory. For instance, poverty amongst African Americans has gone down dramatically over the last 50 years.

    Poverty and Race chart.

I am beginning to see that both "sides" of this debate are arguing about things that have no factual basis. There is no race crisis: African Americans per capita are on a mostly even keel with Whites... Reds seem to think there is a huge problem with Black people (lazy, etc, to over generalize) and so do Blues (still slaves to White America, etc), but there's no real problem that breaks down that way!

We have problems we need to fix for all Americans!

  7. Jag,

Where's all my free stuff so I can "get up to an equal standard" with Bill Gates and Warren Buffet?

Why should I be satisfied with my little middle-class life when there are all these rich people who have more money and cool stuff than I do?

I want some of it. They should give it to me, cause they've got it and I don't.
