Senate Sell-Out

If the Senate has its way, we will get an "Immigration Reform" bill that guarantees this country will be flooded in just a few years, with more immigrants that we can possibly assimilate.

What that means is that the new arrivals will never become "Americans" like all previous groups of immigrants have done, but will remain essentially foreigners with all the rights and privileges of citizenship in this country. Their loyalty will be to their homeland, and their culture and language will compete with our own inside our borders.

This is a problem that was recognized and addressed during the immigration waves from Europe in the early 20th century. At their peak, when the percentage of non-native born people in the U.S. reached nearly 15%, our government lowered the immigrant quotas so that assimilation was assured.

We are reaching that same dangerous percentage...and the Senate's* answer is not to protect the integrity of our culture...but to open the floodgates and make certain that the flood of immigrants is so overwhelming, that it virtually guarantees that they will not become "Americans" at all. Ghettos of huge populations speaking their own language, following their own customs, entrenching their own cultural mores, immune to and disdainful of assimilation by distance from and lack of contact with American culture.

As important as pure numbers, during those immigration waves, we had standards that prospective immigrants had to meet, and demanding requirements for citizenship. We did not accept the indigent, the unskilled and the unhealthy. We demanded they learn English, American history and civics. We requuired that naturalized citizens renounce citizenship to any other counry. The test they studied for, the sacrifices they made, the renunciation they undertook demonstrated the worth, the value and the privilege of citizenship of the United States of America. And the day they took their oath was a day of pride and celebration on which they dressed in their best, and invited family and friends to witness this life-changing event.

That is the process we must return to: Permission to enter; Standards for staying; Requirements for citizenship: learning English, American history and civics and passing a demanding test; renouncing citizenship of all other countries.

We have the RIGHT to demand of immigrants whatever is best for OUR COUNTRY. Among the things that are best for our country is limiting the flood of immigrants until such time as those already allowed to stay here have assimilated properly, adopting the culture of their adopted country.

Unless we want a Spanish speaking culture where police commonly demand bribes, where the military hires itself out to drug lords, where rampant corruption in both government and business keeps the people poor, uneducated, unskilled, hungry and desperate, we'd better close the borders, deport the illegals, and encourage the assimilation of those Mexicans already working toward citizenship.

Assimilation means forging a new primary cultural identity—that of the adopted country. In this case, it means becoming an AMERICAN. Without hyphens. It does not mean ignoring one's roots, or denying one's heritage, but they must be firmly put into second place so there is no divided loyalty, no uncertainty of self-identification, no regret.

To be an American is a rare privilege. Ask the millions who have come here to share the dream.
