Labels of Defeat
Sigh.
Rick Santorum wants to use the power of the State to banish pornography from the Internet.
How is it possible that he thinks that is a "Conservative" position?
Oh, yeah...because idiots like him, every Liberal, "journalist"—and most English dictionaries—define "conservative" as...
"straight-laced"
"intolerant"
"boring"
"traditional"
"repressed"
"uninspired"
"old-fashioned"
"hide-bound"
"unadventurous"
"stick-in-the-mud"
"restrained"
"plain"
"low-key"
"demure"
"moderate"
"buttoned-down"
"understated"
"cautious"
"conventional"
"conformist"
"reactionary"
You can't fix that. That's why we need another word for it. "Libertarian", as much as it is tainted by some pretty silly notions about foreign policy, etc. is still a better word for what "Conservatives" actually are: Believers in small, limited government and maximum liberty for the individual.
It's going to be a lot easier to rehabilitate the term Libertarian than redefine Conservative, trust me.
When I tell people I'm a Conservative, they almost always assume I'm a racist, a bigot, a homophobe, a hardcore Christian believer in Creationism who wants to reinstitute Slavery and force all women to get pregnant every time they have sex. They further assume I play golf at the country club, and would walk over starving children on the street to get to my limousine.
They are conditioned to hate me immediately. (I live on the San Francisco Peninsula).
When I say I am a Libertarian, they don't blink an eye, they nod and smile, because they seem somehow to know that Libertarians don't want to use the power of government to control them.
They feel we can peacefully co-exist...they're response is mild and open. We can talk. I have a chance to convince them of the righteousness of small, limited government. They will listen to me.
This may not be true everywhere, I really am in the Belly of the Beast...but with the persistent and ubiquitous biased MSM reportage, it must eventually get just as confusing elsewhere.
Of course it's stupid, wrong, erroneous and ridiculous. But it is what it is. And we can spend all our time pushing that rock up the hill trying to change everyone's perception of "Conservative"...or we can start identifying ourselves with a term that more properly defines who we are, and what we stand for, and what we believe in.
We really have to get a handle on this, because it limits our ability to get our message across...one that Liberals are actually open to as long as they don't think we are like them—prepared to use the guns of the State to force our diktats down the throats of our fellow citizens.
Rick Santorum calls himself a Conservative, but when he talks of banning pornography...he's just a Liberal in a grey suit.
And I don't trust him.

During My Insanity...
So, part of what I've been doing is enjoying fiction. Crazy, romantic fiction. The kind where heroes save the world in exotic ways and, of course, everyone is beautiful.
Lord of the Rings....Supernatural.....that kind of thing.
And here I am being depressed because our fight...our war...our "saving the world" is so mundane. So boringly, tiresomely banal. Arguing with idiots whose war banners are their hatred of George Bush or Sarah Palin, or Christians.
Sigh...
I get so tired of the sheer mediocrity of our opponents. Unfortunately, even the mediocre can win if there're enough of them, as we know too well.
But...and you'll think this is silly...but I had a strange thought that actually made me feel better.
It occurred to me that inside the story, the heroes didn't see their quests as romantic or exotic. They saw them as hard, serious, gritty, annoying, exhausting...entirely too real-world and commonplace. If you live in a world where monsters exist...fighting them isn't special or exotic, is it?
It just seems so to us.
If you live in a world where magic exists, hanging with wizards isn't much of a stretch.
It's only in the retelling that real-world campaigns become the quests of heroes.
Why does this make me feel better? Because from the point of view of Aragorn or Dean, the heroes of the Sagas, their lives look rather a lot like mine...filled with duty and responsibility that they don't necessarily want...but that somebody has to do because it's important, and it's somehow devolved to them, while so many of those around them live in blissful ignorance.
When we read about the heroes we admire, don't we always imagine they feel the greatness of their actions, the romantic grandness of the meaning of their lives?
And don't we wish we felt like that as we grind away trying to make America safe from Liberals and Progressives?
But I finally realized that for the heroes themselves, their exploits are just plain hard work.
And I see that my life is, in that, a whole lot like theirs.
And while it doesn't make my exploits any more romantic...it's still kinda cool and a little comforting to know that maybe, just maybe...we too are doing the work of heroes!

Who Said?
The owner of the Phoenix Suns basketball team, Robert Sarver, opposes AZ's new immigration laws. Arizona's Governor, Jan Brewer, released the following statement in response to Sarver's criticism of the new law:
"What if the owners of the Suns discovered that hordes of people were sneaking into games without paying? What if they had a good idea who the gate-crashers are, but the ushers and security personnel were not allowed to ask these folks to produce their ticket stubs, thus non-paying attendees couldn't be ejected. Furthermore, what if Suns' ownership was expected to provide those who sneaked in with complimentary eats and drink? And what if, on those days when a gate-crasher became ill or injured, the Suns had to provide free medical care and shelter?" -Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer
It's so refreshing to just hear simple truth, isn't it? Proves how starved we are for it from fucking politicians.
Christie & Brewer...now there's a potential ticket for 2012!

Keen Observation
Posted by: Joseph Somsel
I knew that hippydom and the radical left had peaked in power when I no longer saw pretty women on Haight Street in San Francisco or on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley.
Women seek out and attach themselves to men and movements with power.
So where does one see the most attractive women these days?
The conservative movement.
Is it possible, that like the individual choices that create the Free Market, beautiful/desireable/high status women, by their individual choices—made individually in their own best interests—might, in fact, give us a glimpse into who's winning the culture wars??
When the face of the left is Rosie O'Donnell, and the right is Sarah Palin, perhaps that alone, for very serious and logical sociological reasons should make us sit up and take notice...
Just an interesting thought...that if mined correctly, might be useful...

Human vs Hyena
He say Conservatives need to appeal to people's emotions like Leftists. I get what he means. And maybe it's a good idea as a short-term goal - to win the next election. But to encourage humans to live like animals sounds like a bad idea.
Animals live in their "feelings" (when not operating strictly on instinct). They want what they want when they see it and they have no rules about property or ownership. They'll take it if they can. And pack animals gang up on their victims. They have no rules about fair fights, or proportionate response.
Progressives are busy making government their Pack so they can sic it on anyone who has anything they want. Progressives are like nothing so much as hyenas who watch the lioness make the kill, then as a pack, steal the carcass.
I don't like encouraging that sort of mindless enthusiasm, even if it's for MY cause. I suppose we can learn to stampede animal-natured humans by appealing to their appetites. But what we end up with is still dumb beasts who are not fit to govern themselves.
Reason is what distinguishes human beings from animals. I think it's time we made that appeal.
I don't think we have to be stuffy school marms or talk like actuaries.
In fact, what we need to do is make thinking cool.

Heritage Having None of it!
Heritage is not amused:
The President has made a habit of using conservative talking points when trying to sell a liberal ideology because he knows that this is a center-right country that rejects his agenda when articulated honestly. His supporters have even tried to pin the blame of the potentially unconstitutional individual mandate on us. This approach brushes over the details of our research and ignores our ability to evolve past further developed research.
Over 16,000 new IRS agents will be hired by the government to enforce the President's mandate on the American people. The President's health care plan also raises premiums, taxes, and costs while lowering quality, and expanding Medicaid. These are not conservative ideas.
And let's be clear, these are not ideas Heritage has ever, or would ever, support. We made every effort over the past year to share our ideas for better health care reform with the President and members of both parties in Congress, but were not invited behind the closed doors. Now, after the bill is signed, it seems the President wishes we were along for the ride. We were not. We remain fervently opposed to the President's partisan plan, and urge its immediate repeal. This is not common politics, it's common sense.
Had President Obama limited his bill to centrist elements, he would have won wide bipartisan support for effective reform both within Congress and among the American people. He would have won it, too, at a fraction of the cost of this intolerable, huge and intrusive legislation. He would not now be facing popular rejection by the American people. And he would not need to misrepresent Heritage policies and positions in an attempt to give his radical health plan the patina of respectability.
They used "Let's be clear" twice in the essay. Writers as good as these don't use repetitious language by accident. Nicely done.

Names Matter
"If you analyze it I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism. I think conservatism is really a misnomer just as liberalism is a misnomer for the liberals -- if we were back in the days of the Revolution, so-called conservatives today would be the Liberals and the liberals would be the Tories. The basis of conservatism is a desire for less government interference or less centralized authority or more individual freedom and this is a pretty general description also of what libertarianism is." - Ronald Reagan
I'm glad to see this quote. It's what I keep trying to tell my friends...we have to discard the label "Conservative". It gives a completely wrong impression to those who don't already know what we mean by it.
It communicates boring conformism to those who are not intimately familiar with the "nuances" of political labels. It conjures up uptight, sour "church-ladies", gray-suited pod-people, dead-eyed humans without flare or style or creativity or humor.
If that's not a description of Marxist Intellectuals and Progressive Statists....I've never heard one.
But it sure doesn't fit any of the risk-taking, crazy, innovative, hilarious, eccentric individualists I know...

Conservative as Adjective or Noun
You cannot tell me that freedom does not sell in New England. Conservatives fight for freedom. Republicans fight for Republicanism, but I have no freaking clue what that actually means any more.In Noun vs Adjective, Erick Erickson makes the distinction between being conservative and being "a Conservative".
One is one attribute (presumably among many); one is a defining identity.
W tended to be conservative, but no one who has a clue would ever suggest he was "A Conservtive".
We better be able to make that distinction as we go into the 2010 elections.

Libertarian Conservatives?
Republican/Libertarian Alliance by James Aalan Bernsen has written about it in Texas Republic News, October 27, 2009
Something unprecedented happened in America on April 15, 2009, and the implications for the political landscape of Texas and America could turn out to be profound. A tenuous alliance between two political groups was formed that, if maintained, could reverse years of conservative losses and portend ill news for liberals.
What is happening is a gradual meeting of minds between conservatives and their distant cousins, the Libertarians.
“We’ll work with anybody that we feel is in agreement with our core beliefs,” said Pat Dixon, Libertarian Party of Texas chairman said of the growing alliance between the groups represented by the Tea Parties. “I think when there are ideas of economic freedom” the alliance makes sense.
Bryan Preston, a spokesman for the Texas GOP, said Republicans are reaching out and finding lots of common ground with Libertarians. That common ground traces its roots to opposition to President Obama’s agenda.
“I’m encouraged by the reaction that Obama is spawning among pretty much everyone who doesn’t want government controlling their lives,” Preston said. Pointing to a recent Gallup poll that shows 40 percent of Americans identifying themselves as conservatives, Preston said that Washington is growing increasingly “out of touch.”

The Great Speech
"Another voice says that the profit motive has become outmoded, it must be replaced by the incentives of the welfare state; or our traditional system of individual freedom is incapable of solving the complex problems of the 20th century.
Senator Fullbright has said at Stanford University that the Constitution is outmoded. He referred to the president as our moral teacher and our leader, and he said he is hobbled in his task by the restrictions in power imposed on him by this antiquated document. He must be freed so that he can do for us what he knows is best.
And Senator Clark of Pennsylvania, another articulate spokesman, defines liberalism as "meeting the material needs of the masses through the full power of centralized government." Well, I for one resent it when a representative of the people refers to you and me--the free man and woman of this country--as "the masses." This is a term we haven't applied to ourselves in America. But beyond that, "the full power of centralized government"--this was the very thing the Founding Fathers sought to minimize. They knew that governments don't control things. A government can't control the economy without controlling people. And they know when a government sets out to do that, it must use force and coercion to achieve its purpose. They also knew, those Founding Fathers, that outside of its legitimate functions, government does nothing as well or as economically as the private sector of the economy....
"...You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on Earth, or we will sentence them to take the last step into a thousand years of darkness.
Goldwater & Reagan in one place. Good grief...what an embarrassment of riches!

Mature Morality
Me, I would have simply answered, "yep". Goy does a better job.
So basically what you are saying is that a conservative (right-wing) morality is a more mature moral position than that of a progressive (left-wing)?"*Five moral precepts: fairness, harm, authority, in-group and purity.
"No.What I recognize in the data produced by Jon Haidt’s and his colleagues’ research is that self-described “liberals” (actually leftists) are attracted to a selective, incomplete morality, while self-described “conservatives” (actually, classical liberals) subscribe to a comprehensive, holistic morality – as measured based on a set of five intuitive ethics* identified in the data produced by Haidt’s research – the only wide-ranging research of this kind conducted to date.
What I recognize in reading Haidt’s and others’ work regarding the nature of morality and human psychological development, is that morality is learned, and is a function of individual maturity, recognizing that individuals also mature intellectually, sexually, chronologically, spiritually, emotionally – all at potentially different rates.
What I recognize in the thesis Haidt consistently presents on this topic (e.g., if you watched his TED video or have read any of his papers) is that sustainable societies, that have contributed to the progress of humanity, did so by “using all the tools in the toolbox” (per Haidt), that is, by subscribing to a comprehensive, holistic morality, not a selective, incomplete one. I also recognize that, based on this understanding, Haidt – a self-described atheist and liberal academic – consistently advises his liberal colleagues to more closely examine their own lack of moral diversity and accept that a comprehensive morality is valid.
What I infer from the above – at least in the context of what makes for a truly progressive, sustainable society based on Haidt’s criteria (which I agree with) as demonstrated by America’s history – is that the selective, incomplete morality subscribed to by the left is akin to moral adolescence, whereas the comprehensive, holistic morality exhibited by classical liberals is akin to moral maturity.
Your characterization of what motivates conservatives isn’t based on anything factual. What motivates conservatives (actually, classical liberals) is freedom, individual liberty, individual responsibility, true fairness, charity for the truly needy, religious faith, respect for authority and cohesive national identity aimed at preserving all that, i.e., preserving the way of life they deem valuable. Again, this is all found in the research on this topic.
It’s pointless to proceed down a path littered by nebulous definitions of “left-wing” and “right-wing”. These concepts contribute to a completely distorted understanding of political ideology.
The ideology furthest to the Left results in an omnipotent State, that is totalitarianism – everything inside the State, nothing outside the State, nothing against the State. That is the human condition under which everything is politicized and every facet of human behavior is totally regulated by the State, by definition.
At the far Right of the political spectrum is no government whatsoever – Anarchy.
In the middle – at the Center – is the Republican form of representative, democratically elected government guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution that is the gift of classical liberalism.
- Left-wing – term most commonly used to refer to support for changing traditional social orders or for creating a more egalitarian distribution of wealth and privilege.
This of course is the condition to which leftists claim to aspire. Notably, however, this aspiration has never actually been achieved using leftist ideology – and not for very long even when it comes close to doing so. In fact, societies governed using leftist ideology have universally turned out to be anything but “egalitarian” and have, more often than not, self-destructed under the imbalance of morally adolescent ideology, with attendant loss of life in the tens of millions (e.g., Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Che, Castro, N. Korea, Vietnam, Ethiopia, etc.). The USSR is the most famous recent example. The dying EU-cum-EUSSR will be the next.
Socialism and leftist ideologies will always fail. The reason is simple: you can’t undo four million years of Darwinian evolution with a slogan and some redistribution of wealth at the point of a gun.
Unlike bees, termites, ants and other various forms of life which self-organize as an egalitarian colony, each dedicated to the needs and wants of the rest, human beings are individual organisms first, and social organisms second.
Capitalism and the Republican form of Government guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution are, to date, the best means of harnessing humanity’s basic instincts, given our Darwinian forebears. This is proved by America’s rise from literally nothing to the world’s only cultural, economic, scientific and military superpower in a scant 200 years, followed by the slow decline we’ve experienced as socialist – morally adolescent – ideology has come to control more and more of our social policy."
I have no familiarity with or opinion about Mr. Haidt. And I'm not endorsing Goy's interpretation of him. I just like where he ultimately took his argument.

Blog Notice
Delivery is delayed because I opted to wait for the intro date for Snow Leopard which is Friday, rather than buying the previous OS and upgrading two days later...
On Friday, however, I will be in Sacramento for the Tea Party Express kick-off demonstration for the Tour they're making across the country, to arrive in Washington, D. C. on 9/12 for the big March on Washington taking place 9/12-13. (Unfortunately traveling to D.C. is not an option just now.)
So, it'll be Saturday before I'm back in the regular blog routine.
Thanks, everyone for hanging in there...
In the meantime, can I suggest a book ....a skinny, amazing, down to earth, clear, wonderful book that articulates our point of view with clarity and simplicity?
The Conscience of a Conservative, by Barry Goldwater.
It was written in 1960...and I'm just getting around to reading it now. I want to say "I should have read this so long ago", but I have a feeling I was supposed to read it right now. Because, what I'm reading is confirmation of the conclusions I have come to in my own evolution since 9-11-01.
And he might have written it yesterday...given that the principles he propounds are eternal and universal.
I can't recommend it enough. Like Glenn Beck's Common Sense, I really do recommend you carry The Conscience of a Conservative around with you...so you'll be armed against any argument for collectivism, government programs, State control, "social justice", redistribution of wealth, a "public option" for health care, or anti-capitalism of any stripe.
And if you've already read it, READ IT AGAIN!

Moral Courage
"Few men are willing to brave the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of their colleagues, the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential, vital quality of those who seek to change a world which yields most painfully to change." —Robert Kennedy
Ran across this quote today. It seems timely. It's hard to stand against almost everyone you know. (And most of those you love.) And it's nice to be reminded that doing so has a virtuous and honorable name: Moral Courage.

Happy Fourth of July!

As a gift on Independence Day, I offer you this hope:
Sarah Palin has now been 'vetted' as thoroughly than any politician in recent memory; maybe more so than Hilary? Obama has not had one item of his considerable baggage looked at. The Vanity Fair article was the final inoculation to Sarah's poli-immune system.
She is now freed up to be a conservative guided missile aimed at the weak, pasty, fat liberal underbelly. This is gonna be a lot of fun seeing Sarah do the circuit blowing up all the Obamacrat pretense as she goes along.
The leftards will certainly not lay down and roll over, they will fight more visciously than ever. So pass the popcorn and "Lets get ready to rrummmble"!
This is a comment on the American Thinker post: Sarah Palin Breaks the Mold Again.
No matter what she does, she will be a star. The Slobbering Cult Media and the oily Progressives have tried to destroy the Beauteous Sarah, and have failed, in spite of their wishful thinking.
Note that she says she will be helping and campaigning for "good" people, no matter what party they belong to.
The woman totally "gets it"!

Go Away, Newt Gingrich
He's now part of the squishy "center" who wants to hold hands with Colin Powell as an example of modern Republicanism.
The man needs to go away.
If the GOP makes the mistake of taking this guy seriously, or worse, holding him up as the next "leader" and possible candidate, it is as good as committing Party suicide.
I am finally reconciled to the idea that Democrats are basically stupid. I find I have not yet accepted with equanimity the level of idiocy to be found among Republicans.
Apparently I am not yet cynical enough!

Hopeless Fangirl of Glenn Beck
Glenn Beck, whose been on the radio for years, became, like me, passionate about politics because of 9/11. Since then he has become a crusader for the Founders' America.
He's got a particularly clear sight about the big picture...a talent for connecting the dots in current events that gives him, and his listeners, an advantage in knowing what's really happening...and what's coming.
Alone, almost of all Talk Show hosts, he warned for years about the coming of the current economic crisis, of the dangers of the Fed, of monetizing the debt, and the fascist/progressive nature and direction of mainstream politics.
He discovered and revealed the truth about and the history of American Progressivism, and has recognized that both parties have internalized, at least at the Federal level, its ideals of the rule by the elite—the belief that The People are insufficiently intelligent to manage their own lives, and require leaders with the power to control & dictate their lives for their "own good".
American Progressives have always seen the Constitution as an inconvenient limitation on their ambitions. And it is they who invented the idea of a "living Constitution" so that they could, whenever necessary, dilute and relax its restrictions against the growth and power of government.
And the current behavior of the Federal Government—which without the framework of knowledge of Progressivism seems so senseless and destructive—makes perfect sense when seen through the lens of that knowledge.
Beck has been an instrument of my own education, because he insists that people do not "take his word" for his assertions, but "do their own homework". He has recommended so many books and resources that my 'To Read' stack has become quite intimidating.
Most particularly, I recommend to everyone:
The 5,000 Year Leap: A miracle that chaged the world (by W. Cleon Skousen)
Meltdown (by Thomas E. Woods, Jr.)
American Progressivism (by Ronald Pestritto & William J. Atto)
Woodrow Wilson and the Roots of Modern Liberalism (Pestritto)
Liberal Fascism (by Jonah Goldberg)
That's enough to get anyone started...
Glenn Beck has been called a lot of unattractive things by the State-run media...and even by a few more nasty-minded conservatives who are envious of his growing popularity and media presence (I'm looking at you, Mark Levine), but he is none of those things (in a bad way). But he might be said to be many of them..in the nicest possible way.
He calls himself a "rodeo clown", and an "ex-dj", and a "self-educated guy". He shouts, cries, satirizes, mimics and does silly, goofy things both on his daily radio show and his Fox News Channel television show.
He's funny and smart. He takes his subjects very seriously...but not himself. And if you give him a chance, you'll find yourself informed, motivated, entertained, pissed...and in some ways, scared to death. You'll also find yourself less alone with your fears and concerns.
Now, this might sound really gushy...
...but I actually think he might be the Paul Revere/Thomas Paine of our generation. He is sounding the warning that the Fascists/Statists are coming...and he is calling us to action.
He is a true Crusader for the Founders' America. And I recommend him whole-heartedly.
And I think he scares the government, the Progressives and the state-run media out of their diapers, which is why they have spent so much time lately attacking him with all the resources at their disposal.
Listen to him. You won't be sorry. Here's his Fox News Website.
Here is his/our 912 Project website. This is a meeting place for people who want to take our country back...who want to restore our nation to the Founders' America.
