A liberal of my acquaintance recently referred to the job of the
police as "To Protect and Serve".
I didn't disabuse her of the notion.
She has actually stated that her one worry with regard to a home invasion or burglary is her ability to get to her... phone....
I suggested she might want a firearm instead. She shivered her revulsion, and ignored the suggestion as though it was vaguely obscene.
She'll make a pretty corpse, though.

The origin of the word 'police' is 'polis' or city. The full motto is 'to protect and serve the city government' - not the citizens within.
