My People

  1. I know the whole Confederate flag, Southern, God, guts, and guns thing has a Libertarian taste to it, but it's not always true. You need to be careful of your allies and do a considerable amount of self policing.

I've lived in parts of the South where the flag was a respected symbol of Southern heritage and the people flying it unfailingly polite and cultured. I've lived in parts of the South where if you saw a Confederate Naval Jack, you were dealing with a mouth breather who would gladly shoot you in the face because he was bored. The difference between the two was the trailer park. I've also been unfortunate enough to live in major urban areas. Except for the skin color, there's really no difference between the trash infesting Chicago, Detroit, and DC and the people of the trailer park. Trust me. The trailer parks you find in Appalachia are not like the trailer parks you'll find in California.

Just saying, be careful of stereotypes. They usually exist for a reason and they give your enemies a lot of ammunition to use against you. The people of the trailer parks are the worst advertisement for limited government that it's possible to find.

  2. There is a book..."Confederate Reckoning" by Stephanie Mc Curry...that points out the irony that the CSA,which was borne out of a "State's Rights" agenda, violated that very same concept in how they conducted the "War Of Rebellion",bullying state's Governors, confiscating property, etc. At my grandmother's funeral, there was a story told of how the Confederate Home Guard caught and executed 2 sons who'd deserted the CSA army to help their parent's reap the crops. My grandfather's family were in Kentucky at the time, and all but one brother fought against the Rebellion, since "Hey,we ain't got no slaves, why should we fight against Free Labor? Slaves are an unfair advantage". And,to the above commentator,I resent the slur against people of the trailer parks,as I own a mobile home in a cool,small,4-lot place. We own our abodes, and no bullshit is abided. You are stereotyping,yourself...

  3. I suppose the trailer park is one stereotype I never acquired. I would probably tend to judge the occupants by the conditions I see. There is a certain trailer park appeal to me now that I'm moving and packing. The thought I could just pick up the whole dang house and go is a nice kind of independence. I'll have to try that some day.

  4. Of course I'm stereotyping. That's what people do. It's a good thing as long as you're willing to examine the basis of the stereotype. I wouldn't walk around east DC at night because I stereotype the people there. I'm not saying my stereotype applies to all the residents but it's still best to go with it.

I've got nothing against trailers as such. I've lived in enough of them myself. They make good homes. But be honest with yourself. Think of the trailers you know and the people who live in them. For that matter, think of the people you know who fly the Confederate Naval Flag. If I'd made a stereotypical comment about public housing in West Louisville, you could find someone pointing out the good, and they'd be right, but honestly, there's enough bad that my stereotype would be valid.

The amazing part is, people who are okay with stereotyping ghetto dwellers freak at the the word trailer trash, while those who are okay with the words trailer trash keep telling me I can't stereotype ghetto folk.

The annoying part, and the reason for my prejudice, is the fact that I know many middle class people with Libertarian leanings who consistently vote Democrat. The main reason is that the attitude shown on the shirt causes so many problems in this area that people will automatically vote against any of their perceived beliefs.

Bottom Line: The stereotype is there and wearing that shirt while espousing Libertarian principles is about as effective as wearing a shirt showing Black Panthers with nightsticks while campaigning for the Democrats.

  5. This is all kinda serious for a jokey post.

I come from the Bay Area in Northern California, and the general level of "liberal-minded" self-satisfied, cooler-than-thou pretentiousness is legion. And I'd happily where this shirt just to fuck with 'em.
