Guns and Talk

Heard from a lot of NRA defenders about the deal the NRA was making with Congress to get a special deal cut for themselves....after which they would no longer oppose a First Amendment infringing "campaign (finance) reform" bill, designed to get around the recent SCOTUS decision on McCain-Feingold.

Just in case some of your NRA buddies try to bullshit you....here's what the NRA actually has to say about it. And it's not pretty:

If we get ours....fuck y'all.

"We told Congress we opposed the bill.  Consequently, congressional leaders announced they would exempt us from its draconian restrictions on political speech.  If that happens, we will not be involved in final consideration of this bill in the House.  If it doesn’t, we will strongly oppose the bill."

Isn't that just another way of saying: "We made a deal with the Devil"?

"There are those who say the NRA should put the Second Amendment at risk over a First Amendment principle. That’s easy to say—unless you have a sworn duty to protect the Second Amendment above all else, as we do.

The NRA is a non-partisan, single-issue organization made up of millions of individual members dedicated to the protection of the Second Amendment. We do not represent the interests of other organizations. That’s their responsibility. Our responsibility is to protect and defend the interests of our members. And that we do without apology."

Apparently the NRA has become so estranged from the whole "American" thing, it no longer believes that it is necessary to defend the other Nine Amendments contained in the Bill of Rights.

There is no "Second Amendment" outside the context of the entire Bill of Rights. You can't sacrifice the nine to preserve the one. It's a meaningless construct - it is false, shameful sophistry, used in the attempt to excuse this dishonorable and unprincipled conduct.

GUNS are not the point of the 2nd Amendment.....DEFENSE of our FREEDOMS is the point of the 2nd Amendment. The NRA is arguing that to preserve the 2nd Amendment, they are prepared to sacrifice (at least for all others) the very freedoms it was instituted to protect! It's utterly illogical.

What sort of genius at the NRA prepared that statement? More to the point, I suppose, is what sort of pinheads think like that?

What brainiac thought anyone outside their little corporate insider club would actually consider that a reasonable argument?

Hey, I love guns. And I like organizations that protect the 2nd Amendment....but I'm thinking the NRA might just be run—at least at the moment—by a serious load of idjits.

  1. I'll never forget one of former Rep. Bob Dornan's Special Orders where he said "The Second Amendment isn't about hunting ducks, it's about hunting politicians." That was in the wake of a statement by Bill Clinton that some new gun legislation wasn't going to affect hunters, supposedly to reassure the "gun lobby" that their rights were secure. I could be wrong, but the NRA seems to back away from Dornan's correct understanding of the Second Amendament and emphasizes our "duck hunting" rights ala Bill Clinton. Who needs free speech when what really matters is a polished duck call, decoy and properly loaded bird shot?
