Regrets

We're supposed to the "the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave".

Not "the Land of the Well Medicated and the Home of the Housed".

Why are we even HAVING this discussion?

The Founders would be furious...(and probably very depressed.)

Thinking about the Liberals arguing with me yesterday, it occurred to me that they are not really Americans. I mean classical, original, independent, down-to-earth, common-sense Americans, to whom freedom is the foremost virtue. There were arguing like serfs. Like dependents. Like slaves.

"Take care of us!" has replaced "Liberty!" as their rallying cry.

The more I think of it, the more it creeps me out. These were two youngish men, whose ideas, instead of reflecting the strength, independence, humor, courage, self-reliance, strength and virility of the cowboy, the pioneer, the rebel, and the revolutionary, were, in their man voices, whimpering like lost toddlers for someone to take their hands and lead them to safety and security.

They were not Americans as I define them. In them, the blood has thinned, gone cold and weak. They are nothing more than the emasculated shades of free men, in spite of the appearance of masculinity.

But perhaps they can be "saved" under the right circumstances. Perhaps their American souls are just sleeping, bereft as they have been for so long of any cultural stirring, appreciation, approbation or celebration of real, true, solid, strong, sacred Americanism.

Wherever would they have come in contact with it in the last 4o years? In School? The Movies? The News? Popular Music?

I think I let them down, actually. I missed a "teaching moment". I allowed myself to get into a discussion about Health Care, instead of Liberty.

I won't make that mistake again.

  1. I think this goes back to your Wolf, Sheep Dog, Sheep blog. Unlike you, I don't believe that they can be made to prefer freedom. Jefferson did say this would happen once we became urbanized (not bad for a dead, white guy). The county by county voting map bears this out.

That's why the 10th amendment movement is so important. It allows both sides room to retreat. Unless of course we want make politics our life so that we can impose our will on the masses. That's how the other side got where they are.

  2. When men prefer a government provided peanut butter sandwich rather than to work for their own steak dinner....then all liberty is lost.

The good news is, sooner or later, the Government eventually runs out of peanut butter. Just ask the former Socialist Soviet Union. Then the dependent are forced to make their own damn sandwich...or starve.

  3. It is sad. I concur. I have this conversation frequently. Luckily I live in mostly conservative area and my neighbors and coworkers have much the same mindset as myself.

Since when is security preferable to Liberty?
    These are sad times indeed.
