A Libertarian Defense of Social Conservatism.
The Founders said that a Virtuous People is necessary for the maintenance of Liberty.
They are right. Morality/Virtue are is required of people who would be free, and Social Conservatism is nothing more or less than good, old-fashioned "morals".
The Left finds Social Conservatism vile.
But...does that reflect badly on the Social Conservatism—or on the Left?
The Vampire finds Holy Water vile.
Does that reflect badly on the Holy Water—or on the Vampire?
Seems pretty clear to me.

The whole debate of "Liberal" vs. "Conservative" is old hat, superficial, and relies on caricature to drone on endlessly. How about "Individualist" vs."Collectivist" for a new paradigm? Brings it down to basics,no room for BS.One can dream...
ReplyDeleteI like it. As long as "Individualist" incorporates some understanding of private and public "virtue".
ReplyDeleteWithout it we cannot maintain freedom.
True.Capitalism("Free Market",etc.)doesn't work to Society's general benefit without a moral compass. It's why the economy is in this pickle...greedy lendees and greedy consumers/loanees lacking the virtue of responsiblity...and now this unfolding Farce of a Big Daddy-in-Waiting to "solve" the problem.Obama obviously has issues with wanting to be the Daddy/Provider his own father never was to him.Yep,I'm one of those people that believes the personal does influence the public in these times. The root of the problem---few know how to separate their desires from Society's needs.Sad...
ReplyDeleteThat's because nobody reads the goddamned Constitution!
ReplyDeleteThey don't have figure it all out influenced by their individual psychosis...all they have to do is follow the MANUAL!
Why is that so hard for them to fucking understand????
When I was 12,I got a Constitution "poster",and, wanting to be a lawyer after reading John Adams bio, copied it out by hand,in order to understand it as best I could,in my limited way.Pocket Constitution available at "heritage.org" (obiviously, should be required in schools-it's free!-or maybe have Kelsey Grammar do an explaining vid for the young folks).Said it before, but Grandpa was a magistrate in Carthage,Tennessee who played poker with Al Gore,Sr.(side-note:Grandpa switched from Dem to Rep in 1930s because FDR was a "rich Socialist hypocrite",and said Gore,Sr. was "the crookedest s.o.b. who shit between two legs"-maybe as a poke player,or because of his use of Interstate Bill to line his pockets (buying land where he knew as Senator where Interstate would go,and selling it to the Government).Al,Jr.continues "family tradition".It goes on...to make it simple for the simpleton Americans---"Follow The Money" behind the do-gooders' pious blather.Since they won't understand anything deeper than self-interest...
ReplyDeleteContinued blather:from Brookhiser's lovely bio of Gouverneur Morris (who wrote the Constitution)in a letter to John Jay re:French Revolution---"A Nation not yet fitted by education and habit for the enjoyment of freedom will greatly overshoot their mark",and in a letter to George Washington after leaving revolutionary France---"they never appeared to me to have the needful education...for free government".Sound familiar/similar to these times? When the concept of Elite (i.e.,Talent and Accomplishment) is overthrown in a culture, the cretinous Mob seizes power.I love The People as individuals, yet hate The Mob.The bigger the crowd, the lower the collective I.Q.Retail worker's death on Long Island at mall-sale today proves it.Too much materialism...
