A comment from tj brought up an interesting subject: How long will it be until the left turns on Obie for "betraying" them?
I read a fun blog called DUmmie FUnnies regularly in which the author reprints nutty threads from Democratic Underground and The Daily Kos with his snarky comments added. Some of the stuff is beyond belief. That any adult with a functioning brain can believe the things these idiots do is mind-boggling. (They are the New Democrats, remember. The ones guiding the Party, pulling it into the swamp of Radicalism from which it seems unable to escape.)
A pattern I've noticed in their ravings is the invariable sense of betrayal they experience when their erstwhile perfect heroes stray across their rigid ideological boundaries. That the narrowness of their path would make a mountian goat blanch makes it inevitable that each succeeding champion will ultimately take a false step and be revealed to their eyes as a false prophet.
And when he does, they turn on him like The Furies.
Things they've said about Hill and Bill, Edwards and Kerry, are malignant enough to strike you blind...after having lauded them, each in his turn, as The Glorious One that will lead them out of the desert and darkness of (perpetually imminent) Republican Totalitarianism.
But until they turn, they believe. They believe beyond anything we would call magical thinking. They believe with an intensity only perfect ignorance can manifest. And while they believe, their Paragon CAN. DO. NO. WRONG. Even to suggest such a thing is to engage in "hate".
There was a custom in ancient Europe, researched by Sir James Frazer in The Golden Bough, in which a king was selected annually to rule over the people. He lived as a pampered prince—for one year—after which he was sacrificed in order to insure a bountiful harvest.
This custom seems to have some currency on the Left.
While the degree of their zealous madness for Obama may be unusual (enhanced, in my opinion, by his race), the actual style of their blind adoration isn't different, in kind, from what they offered Hillary and Bill in their heyday, or the wildly distorted "heroic" lens through which they saw John Kerry, or their consummate belief in the unreserved altruism, compassion and rectitude of John Edwards.
But each "betrayed" the Left. And their dismembered carcasses litter the altar precinct.
Hillary had the temerity to run against Obama. Bill, supporting his wife, was painted with the same tar, and became a pariah. Kerry was a coward and a pretender who wouldn't "fight" for the "win" in 2004. Edwards cheated on his wife, got caught ignomiously, lied, then lied some more. (The irony of this seems lost on the Left who defended Bill endlessly for this same crime...only to ride him out on a rail for being true to his wife during her campaign. But then, I'm not suggesting there's logic in their reasoning, only that there is a continuously repeating loop of behavior.)
I think it's likely that at some point Obama will take that irretrievable step over the line, and that he too will end up a failed promise, a doomed hope, a reviled betrayer.
It may not happen soon enough to save us all from perdition should he be elected. But I'm convinced it will happen. It always happens. The Left insist on perfect ideological purity, and they are adamantly unforgiving of imperfect heroes.
If Obama doesn't pull all the troops from Iraq in a week, if he compromises with Republicans to pass legislation, if he appoints a moderate judge, if he somehow realizes that tax increases will ruin a faltering economy and doesn't impose them...or makes any of a thousand other mistakes that will condemn him, he will find himself cast onto the bloodied sacrificial altar like all the fleeting kings who came before him.
God knows I don't want Obie elected. But at least we'll have this to look forward to if he is.
