"These two failed agencies [Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac] were one more way of Congress controlling the free market. These two agencies were meant as an attempt to make home ownership available to more of the poorer citizens in our society. Food stamps and public housing had worked so well why not go one step further and offer home ownership to these underprivileged, undeserving, underachievers who claim entitlements as some kind of right? Congress has come to believe it’s their lot in life to spend the public’s money, and where else but on those who don’t have any money and are perfectly content to accept congress' gifts as long as there are no expectations placed on them."[Edited for punctuation, spelling]
Ken Hughes has more to say here.
I don't agree with Hughes that the crisis is "over". Or that Bush's "experts" fixed everything. But I agree with his overall sentiment that it's not the government's business to run business, or to make sure we all have everything our little hearts desire.
I also wish Ken paid a little more attention to grammar and spelling. But hey...you can't have everything. I have a feeling he's like me: His monkey mind runs faster than his fingers can type accurately.
Hey, better good ideas imperfectly typed than crappy ideas beautifully composed.
