My Bad, It's All About Tim Russert...

I have been ignoring the news. Total blackout. So I didn't know till this morning that Tim Russert had died. Not that it makes much difference to me. I'm sad for his family in that normal detached, impersonal, generically compassionate way you always feel when you hear of an untimely death. Otherwise...I don't have much of response at all. He was just some news guy.

The first thing—in fact, the only thing— I heard or read this morning was about the orgy of coverage his death prompted in the press. Apparently the self-aggrandizing, self-centered, self-referential self-indulgence of the media was once again on spectacular display.

Pathetic symptom of their general disease.

When, exactly, did it become all about them?

What a mess. What a tragedy. Not Russet's death, sad as that is, but the total inversion of the idea that the Free Press (!) stands as a bullwark against corruption and tyranny in government.

Yeah, OK. Next time they tear their loving gaze from the mirror for a moment...let me know. Maybe they'll say something that's worth hearing.

But I ain't holdin' my breath.

  1. Had my own media blackout til Sunday.Wasn't too surprised at the msm's vain and egocentric reaction ("tragedy to the country...").Seemed like a nice enough guy compared to the others, but if I remember correctly from an article back in the 90s,his wife was just one of many spouses of media talking heads who worked in some capacity for the Clintons, just another cozy little DC insider couple.OF COURSE it's all about THEM,this is their world,we just live in it!He did seem like a nice fella to have a beer with, tho.I'd have thought Chris Matthews woulda popped his own cork by now,as excited as he gets...is that guy still on?

  4. At least NBC made lemons into lemonade by naming Keith Olbermann as Russert's replacement.
