At the Risk...

Did I mention 3 Doors Down, Daughtry (yes, really), and Hinder (who?)?

And OK, there's this song by Audioslave, Like a Stone. Chris Cornell. Yes, I know his fans are insanely passionate about him in all his manifestations (Audioslave, Soundgarden, blah, blah, blah).

I admit I can't understand it exactly. I've only listened to a few of his things, but I'm not crushing on the dude, ok? But I do like this song. At the risk of getting, er, stoned by the impassioned, I think it might sound better by someone who could, you know, actually sing.

And can I say, "just no" to that creepy mustache?

Don't come lecturing me about how old these bands are, or how obscure, or poppy (popish?) or punk or so "yesterday" or "one-hit-wonders"...I'm just discovering music again, and I can't do it all in one gulp. I'm jumping in where people point, and it's all very random.

I'll kindly accept any recommendations. Here are the sort of thing I'm liking right now:

Punk/grunge/post grunge/generic "alternative"/rock/pop-rock....all with a good melody and a good hook. Just screeching isn't music.
Hot choruses are nice.
Harmony (Nickelback's Hero for example)
Fast rather than slow given the choice. (By fast I mean a good back beat "something you can dance to"...not the hot mess of a punk speed metal trainwreck.)

Then again, right this second, I'm listening to "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow" from Brother, Where Art Thou? Could it get more Blue Grass?

  1. You might try the Pixies - "Here Comes Your Man," "Debaser," and "Wave of Mutilation" are few of my favorites. If you like them, check out Modest Mouse (I am guessing MM is a little abstract for your taste, but who knows.) "Laser Life" by Blood Brothers maybe... maybe "Follow" by Bang Gang (a little slow and sappy though). I don't listen a lot of Rock, mostly Hip Hop and digital beats. There's a lot of good stuff going on all over the spectrum of genres (depending on which genres ya like though).

Hah! It's a music safari. I can't believe all the stuff I get to discover!

Which for some reason reminds me of Jan & Dean...or the Beach Boys...

  5. Try some hard and heavy Blues. Joe Bonamassa (anything). Walter Trout (anything). Smokin' Joe Kubek (anything). Buddy Guy (especially Sweet Tea for a sonic experience that will change your very being). Blues has the sorrow and joy and celebration of life just as it is. If jazz is your cup of tea try Keith Jarrett Trio, Brad Mehldau, Michael Brecker. There have been lulls over the years but I neevr gave up the music. Now at 46 I find I listen to what my young adult daughters do and they like mine just as much. I find a seasonality to the music I listen to. Summer tends to be Bluegrass and Country. Winter brings on the heavier stuff (metal, alternative, rock like Velvet Revolver, Hinder, Silvertide). But despite season there is always Blues and Jazz. And my default defensive position The Allman Brothers. It's summer crack one open and turn that radio up!
