Shelby Steele wrote a great book called White Guilt. I recommend it highly. In it he presents a very cogent psychological history of how we got from the 50's solid, stolid, sensible, confident Americanism to the mess of multiculturalism, racial divide, degeneracy, moral insecurity, and anti-Americanism in a single generation.
Today, in a piece in the Wall Street Journal, Steele gives us his take on Barack Obama's meteoric rise, and his fatal weakness. As always, Steele's perspective on race, as a Black man in America, is penetrating and sometimes revealing...at least to White Americans.
He talks about "bargaining" and "challenging", two different strategies that Blacks use when dealing with Whites. I feel sad that either one is still considered necessary.
