As Harbinger noted in a comment below, Nancy Pelosi was distracting in the extreme during the State of the Union speech. I could not keep my eyes off her. She was clearly trying to be polite and civil and sit still. She did not engage in Hillary eye-rolling or sneering, nor broadcast boredom or disapproval. And she applauded rather more than I expected. But what was with her constantly moving mouth? I kept thinking she was sucking on hard candies. But she never put anything IN there!
(Did she pop in an Everlasting Gobstopper before the speech?)
Then this morning I heard someone comment that older people sometimes get that moving mouth thing going on. You know, old men with gimpy, ill-fitting dentures...or no teeth at all, sucking and blowing and chewing their lips in and out? It's the sort of thing that character actors use to indicate advanced age or general decrepitude.
The problem is, Nancy's had so much (and such good) cosmetic surgery, she looks 30 years younger than her natural age, and that old-lady smooshing mouth business just looks really odd on her apparently youngish face.
And the blinking! Jeez, give it a rest. She made my eyes tired.
Who knew she had so many tics?
It's not her fault and I'm not blaming her. But it was nevertheless vaguely disturbing to see. And damned distracting.
Perhaps as a kindness to spectators, other speakers and the Lady herself, she should not be in front of the cameras for any length of time unless she is giving the speech.
