Nobody apparently is prepared to defend the South in their bid for freedom from the oppressive Northern States.
"Slavery" becomes the center and the poison of any conversation about the Civil War and why the Confederacy wanted out.
But, nevertheless, in my opinion, this is still true:
"If you can't leave, you're not free."

I have written about this because secession is a principle contained in the Declaration of Independence. My contention is the War Between the States (it was not a "Civil War") was about economics and not abiding by the Constitution. Nothing in the Constitution prohibits secession. One of the reasons Jefferson Davis was not tried for treason is because Republicans feared the Supreme Court would declare the entire war unconstitutional.
