Firewall, with Bill Whittle

Whittle's take on history is very comforting. According to him, we are on the right side of history, and belong to the future...and those we fight against, the big government cronies are fighting a losing battle, as they are the creatures of the past.

I like it. Here's his argument:

  1. I have to give this more thought but there may be alternative outcomes, the surveilance age, the misinformation age, the ultimate control age. There is something missing from this analysis. I can't put my finger on it yet, but I will find it.

  2. Unfortunately I don't foresee the orderly transition that Bill speaks of. Our Federal Government, Democrats and Republicans, are far too arrogant and caught up in themselves and their position of power to graciously step aside.
A brief review of what Republicans pulled in the last election in Florida, Delaware, New York and Alaska should be fair warning that the established political parties are in it for the long haul. I won't mention the nefarious deeds of the Democrats.

  3. Whittle's analysis ignores huge swaths of human history as if nothing of great significance occured between the development of agriculture and the Industrial Revolution. Big government for the benefit of the few in just about every imaginable form has been experienced in that time span he jumps. Lest we forget empires established in Rome, Persia, China and so on. They were big government bureaucarcies and did try to placate the masses while giving the few extraordinary access to wealth and power.

Robber barons were not the product of the Industrial Revolution but an earlier age. Lets not forget the origin of the term from the Danube and Rhine.

I personally reject the notion we are entering the Information Age. It's more like the Communication Age, filled with misinformation as well as information, intrusive surveilance and a highly illiterate but gadget saavy population. It doesn't portend any great decentralization but may usher in an age of mass manipulation. I think Wikipedia is an excellent example that is much too frequently used to misinform. I've been sucked into that trap myself and only realised it when I researched the original documents "condensed and summarized" by Wiki.

I'm afraid the Communication Age portends nothing that is predictable in human behavior or governance. We still have our work to do.

  4. Wonderful video, Gunslinger (as Whittle's always are.) We DID self-organize - can you imagine what a threat that is to the powers that be? It really must be the greatest one since the time of the robber barons. We have taken old glory down for the time being and fly our Gadsden flag larger than life - makes the neighbors nervous and annoys the police but so be it; we earned it and will continue to be hopeful until the last of the voices of hope (such as Whittle) are well and truly drowned out or until "conquer we must when our cause it is just". I see him as a voice of reason and positivity...and high intelligence (which is a biggie.) Long may he wave :)

Thanks for sharing this one, Gunslinger; I'm never sorry for having watched a Whittle video.
