Harry Reid's "Negro"

Okay, can we be frank?

Is there such a thing as a "Negro Dialect"? A "Black Accent"? An "Urban Patois"?

Can we admit that Al Sharpton speaks differently than Barack Øbama?

And can we admit the difference is that Øbama "talks white" (to use a Black expression), and that Sharpton has a sound, an inflection, an accent...or something...that instantly identifies him as "black"?

Can we admit that in most cases, even on the telephone, you can tell when the person at the other end is black?

It's just not that outrageous a concept. It's one we all are, apparently secretly, aware of. Blacks included. Or else they wouldn't have the expression, "talking white".

Now, it is true that not all Black people speak with the Southern Black Accent/Ghetto Patois. But a lot do. It is instantly identifiable. And to pretend it isn't is to LIE.

And every politician, Black, talk-show host and reporter who is currently pretending he doesn't have any idea what Harry Reid was talking about is about as funny a public PC delirium as I've ever seen.

It's the classic Elephant in the room that nobody wants to acknowledge.

It is suddenly "racist" to admit that a whole lot of Blacks sound different than Whites? Is it suddently "racist" to mention it?

Is it racist to acknowledge that what's called "Talking White" is essentially Standard American English?

And is it racist to admit that someone who can't speak Standard American English might have trouble getting elected president?

And can we admit that an "Urban Patois" is a sign of membership in a minority culture...a sign of NOT having assimilated into the larger General Culture by learning the language?

And can we admit that an identifiable member of a different culture, and who doesn't speak the language, might not seem, at least to most folks, the best choice as leader of the larger General Culture?

When ghetto youth accuse kids of "talking white" when they use standard American English, they are signaling their determination to remain separate and apart from the larger General Culture. They are signaling their desire to remain alienated.

That is the underlying message.

And I don't think it's racist or even extraordinary that most Americans who are NOT part of that alienated minority culture are dubious about electing people who by virtue of their speech advertise the fact of their separation from them, their culture and their concerns.

Now, I don't think we go through this convoluted thought process when we hear a "Negro Dialect". But I think we "get it" just the same.

And Harry Reid was right when he said that because Øbama didn't sound that way, he'd likely be a more successful candidate. It's obviously true. And it's equally obvious that in our hysteria about race, not a single person is willing to admit it out loud.

Poor Harry. He got snookered by the Truth.

He's like the serial killer who gets convicted and hanged for the one murder he didn't commit.

He was wrong about skin color though. And of course, that just shows he thinks we're all a bunch of brainless bigots. Nobody cares how light or dark your skin is, Harry.

It's about CULTURE not COLOR. And when we all finally figure that out, it'll be a great day for America.

  1. Tsk! Tsk! Tsk! Next thing you know, you'll be saying that rural southern whites have accents!

The funny part is that late in the 90's, there was as movement among certain black and white liberals to classify this Black Urban Speech as a language. Remember Ebonics?

If you would like to leave a message for your congressman we promise to get back with you asap on issues that are important to you. Press 1 for ebonics. press 2 for spanish. press 3 for english, however if you speak english it will take longer for us to translate, therefore answers to your questions will be delayed. Kill Whitey! Such bullshit drama on their part anything to take the focus off what is really going on. I am still trying to figure out when the American language became a dying dialect in this country. You know kinda like ancient latin.

Thank you for stating the (should be) obvious (and secretly is). And for those of the GOPc who are trying to sink Reid on That account... who admit that of all the anti-American things he has said and done, it is only that which they find to be 'unacceptable'? I'd like to thank them for adding their names to my de-Elect target list.

  6. I've read this elsewhere, probably over at Rush: Reid's 2008 comment 'meant' BHO's light skin and lack of negro dialect made him a good candidate.

Umm, because dark colored blacks with negro dialect make 'bad' candidates: in Reid's opinion.

    Sorry, but THAT is RACISM.

There are LOTS of American dialects. Hell, I can't even understand people in Long Island but I know they are speaking english.

So, do 'elites' (in their own minds) like Reid/Dems think less of people because they have accents (or because they are non-white, working mothers, non-Harvard educated, ___ insert reason here, etc)...?

    you betcha...

    Definitely.

Negro dialect, Appalachian, Oklahoman or anything that seems to smack of Red Neckian. Although racism is not unfamiliar to the Dems (they are after all, the party of the Confederacy, Jim Crow, Minimum Wage (originally passed to keep Blacks from competing with union workers (look it up)), their particular brand of prejudice and bigotry is, IMHO, far worse than racism, it's one of those worthy of ruling... and all others who are fit only to serve them... in whatever capacity they might be capable of.

What I object to is the "Oh! He said X! How Offensive! He can't be trusted! He should be (pardon the term) blackballed!"

Sorry, but B. freakin' S., it's political correctness, and who ever thinks they are benefitting from it, or taking advantage of it, it is destroying our ability to communicate.
    No one believes it.
    No one believes the 'offensiveness'.
Everyone pretends as if they do.
    Everyone participates in the lie.
    Truth loses, dishonesty wins.

Another, better term, for political correctness is 'Cultural Marxism', and I hates all those who participates in it.

    Argh.

  9. What bugs me often:

Dems using the race card & race baiting over and over like a club only they can wield.

    Very tiresome.

p.s. there aren't many people on the planet without some type of accent.

Rush has good discussion today on this topic.

Reid will be voted out pronto, his home state not happy with him at all.

  10. Here is my take on racism in a nutshell if you live in this Great Country of Ours. If you have a valid citizenship as an American then act like one. Ebonics is not a language. Racism is so way over let it die already. Case in point there should be no sur titles allowed. Pull your pants up and Speak ENGLISH! Only here in America do we allow this when was the last time you heard a black person from england call themself african english. You are either an african or American, mexican or American etc. you can't be both nobody owes you a damn thing because of your ancestors, white, red, brown, black or yellow work for it like everybody else in this country. I am not saying that you shouldn't be proud of your ancestors or of your heritage but it shouldn't come before being an American. This country of ours is a great melting pot we are all mutts here it is one of the things that make it such a great place to live. However there are people in this country that like to pull the race card out whenever it benefits them. The double standards are getting tired there should only be one standard and one side to this however there is not if you make up the rules abide by them don't change them just because it benefits you at the time. If it had been a conservative that said this they would be all up in arms not becoming of someone in public office to say such a thing but since it was Uncle Harry that said it its ok. WTF? Since the rules however are allowed to be changed whenever it benefits them here is my proposal to congress, I don't like the taxes that you are imposing on me to fix your fuckups so I am changing the rules. Therefore I am sending you a different amount than what you say i owe you will notice the corrections that i have made on the w2 in red ink on your goverment form zero. YEA..... If it were only that easy! "America Land Of The Free" Defended by BIG Bullets and lots of Blood if need be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. What has been bugging me about this, was not so much what Reid may or may not have disclosed about himself, but what what he said actually disclosed about what he thought about the 'racist attitude' of the nation - and that no one found that to be controversial in the least, and that I damn him, and his fans, for in full force.

  13. I'd like to point out that a patois/argot is different than an accent.

    An accent is merely regional.

The patois/argot is cultural — it's an excluding and exclusive dialect-jargon-vernacular...with constructions and usage that are not standard.

Big difference. Let's not confuse the two.
