Scouts Get Serious

Honestly, I'm not sure how I feel about this. Training the Boy and Girl Scouts to be part of the growing government —especially a part that tends to be persecuted by other parts—is a little disturbing.

Is the Border Patrol a wise career choice considering the fate of Ramos and Campean?

  1. The only part of this that bothers me is they are training to go against the "Sick" war vet. . .

No problem training them to fight terrorists and such but the vets are the good guys folks. . . well, maybe not in CA but they should be. . .

  2. Hmm...Am I the only one who thinks this is creepy?

On the other hand, I didn't know if you had seen this or not, but just thought I'd pass it on. Delicious, in my book.

  3. "Lizp",thanks for the Nuge link...Re:the Scouts, call me a curmudgeon, but I never cared for the Scouts (I HATE organized groups),tho I'm sure they helped some.As a kid,I went camping with neighbor-Dads who were Korean War vets in the late 60s,who'd let us play "War" in a more real manner than this candy-assed way.Today, they'd probably be brought up on some sort of "child abuse" charges ("They let them play with real weaponry!").Their lesson was "Fight for your brothers",rather than "Fight for your Government"...So much for "sick war Vets"...Ah,cherished memories...

  4. Bullshit I say. Here are your new storm troopers. Although I wasn't a scout for long ( like TJ, the organizational thing didn't quite fit), teaching woodcraft and basic firearms skills served many for years. If this is the evolution of a once honored tradition I'll be damned if I'll ever buy another cookie.

  5. Not much different from the Hitler youth. If you can get them young enough, you have got them for life.

  6. I've been involved with the Scouts for almost a decade now, with my son and, recently, teaching the Citizenship in the Nation merit badge to other troops. I will tell you that the Scouting organization is very conservative, and everyone I've ever met in the Scouts has been very conservative.

Any training or trip that the scouts go on has to be approved by the boys (and girls for Explorers/Venturers), and in some cases, the adult leadership. This particular training is certainly interesting, and can provide some real life lessons, but I have a problem with the "disgruntled war vet" as well.

As for that, I would put the questions to Sheriff's department there in Imperial, not the scouts or the BSA. The Sheriff's office put the course together for the scouts.

As for those who don't like the Scouts...I'll tell you from experience that the BSA is all about teaching boys to be respectful, disciplined and patriotic. Sure, there will be leaders who don't follow the scouting principles, but those exist everywhere. The majority of scouts and leaders truly believe and follow the Scout Law and Oath.
