Of course they do.
Frightened Andrea wants someone who "blinks"...at all those important moments in life. She wants someone who will ponder, consider, reflect, contemplate. Which is fine for a tenured university professor—or a privileged columnist idling over a latté.
But in the real world, the dangerous one...it's called dithering. And it can get you killed.
Read an excellent response to this sort of blather by E.L. Burton.
As a special gift, there is a comment written by Craig Nelson. He explains what the choice of Sarah Palin reveals about John McCain. It's as insightful and important as the original article. I know I instinctively responded with greater respect for McCain when he selected Palin, because I could see it was a great tactical move—on so many levels, but Nelson provides clarity and a perspective that never occured to me. I include it here for those who don't torture themselves by reading Comments:
I am no hero nor candidate for president, just a normal guy, 58 years old who has driven millions of miles in life and work and never had an automobile accident. That may seem to have nothing to do with the attention that Sarah Palin is getting but I believe it does. You see I had flight training when I was young and learned about the skill of having to be completely aware of everything around me as a young pilot.McCain achieved a much higher degree of that same skill setMcCain was not on my short list for President and when he got the nomination I was really let down and deflated. Much is being made of the Sarah Palin pick for VP and when asked months ago who I thought would be the best choice Palin was in fact on my short list. However I followed that by saying that McCain would never pick her.
When McCain did pick her it did not alter my perspective of the path McCain has taken with legislation in his years in government. What changed for me was McCain's ability to operate within the entire envelope of this political campaign and that style of thinking is part of him not just political but in all things presidential not unlike my ability to travel the highways for decades never making a mistake.
I began to see within McCain to ability to sort through the tangle of messages he gets and to make the best decision to achieve a goal. It may not be the result I want but in the fog of that debate it may be the best that can be achieved for the moment. This Palin pick blindsided the Obama camp and blindsiding the opposition is what a fighter pilot is trained to do. To make the most of the assets you have and not whine about not having enough, just get the job done.
Do not whine about not having enough money for education, that is an excuse shifting the blame for failed ideas to 300 million of us rather than facing up to a failed system. Do not whine about how the Russians behave and blame 300 million of us again and insinuate that the USA is the problem. Do not whine about energy for the USA, that we cannot be responsible to produce energy and a clean environment, but get to work and make it happen.
Obama whines at every tick of the political clock and McCain calls shots that gets the job done and Sarah is just one of the decisions. I like that. Sarah is great but possibly only one aspect, one decision, of what may become a great presidency that could extend 12 or more years. That is thinking within the complete envelope, it took me by surprise and for that reason my perspective of McCain has improved dramatically.
Craig Nelson
Oh BTW, as for the terminally smug Mitchell, if Gov. Palin had indicated that she did "blink" when asked, Andrea the Obot would be damning her as indecisive—and therefore clearly not qualified to be Vice President.
