I'm not sure these people are really clear on the potential unintended effects of such symbolism. Are they so besotted with Obie that they assume everyone is? Or are they just stupid?
Perhaps their bitter atheism has left them so desperate and hungry for meaning, that they are ready suckers and dupes for this weird and very un-American "cult of personality"...to warm their withered souls.
It's a very disturbing spectacle.
