Out of the Countryside

.
I sorta feel bad, here:

"Children have lost touch with the natural world and are unable to identify common animals and plants, according to a survey.

Half of youngsters aged nine to 11 were unable to identify a daddy-long-legs, oak tree, blue tit or bluebell, in the poll by BBC Wildlife Magazine. The study also found that playing in the countryside was children's least popular way of spending their spare time, and that they would rather see friends or play on their computer than go for a walk or play outdoors."

I haven't got the slightest idea what a blue tit or a blue bell is...an oak tree, maybe.

If I had to guess, I'd say a blue tit was a bird (not a frigid breast), and a blue bell, a flower, not just a misspelling of a certain condition of sexually frustrated teenage boys.

But, I think it depends where you're from. I grew up in the suburbs of San Francisco. Do we have blue tits and blue bells? I've never seen a firefly in my life or a pond where frogs are available for capture.

Am I putting the future of the nation at risk in my ignorance?

As for "playing in the countryside"....I guess it's nice if there is some anywhere near you...but then again I suspect it entails a lot of bugs and mice and lizards and spiders and other creepy, crawly things; lots of dirt, dust and weeds, and fleas, ticks, and other parasites....ugh!

Does that make me a bad person?

On the other hand, when is the last time anyone ever heard a kid say, "I think I'll go take a walk."

Old people do that.

I think old Attenborough needs to relax. Everything will be OK.
