This morning on the way to work, I was listening to Glenn Beck and heard an interview with Arthur C. Brooks, author of the new book, Gross National Happiness.
The conversation was enlightening on two levels. He affirmed what we already know—that Conservatives are much happier than Liberals—and he listed the three general conditions that are required for happiness:
1) Religious Freedom
2) Political Freedom
3) Economic Freedom
Notice a theme here?
People who were the most free to choose and practice their own religion were happiest. People who were the most free to direct or influence or dissent in politics were happiest. People who were free to make a living without undue government interference were happiest.
It also turns out that people who were most happy of all were those that practiced "traditional values". Those that were religious* were happiest. Those that were honest and honorable were happiest. Those who worked hardest were happiest!
Self-direction, self-reliance, self-respect, self-defense, choices, freedom. What a concept.

* "Religion" does not mean politics masquerading as religion like Obie's church or Islam.

Verily, tis true, your post.I've been taken to be a bit obnoxious lately, because when someone is whining indiscriminately about EVERYTHING in their life,I pause and then ask..."You vote Liberal/Democrat,don't you?"-answer is invarialbly "yes".When people only have man-made,material values to grade their lives, they're always dis-satisfied.They obsess about the material (how petty is Marxism). This is the main drive with the politics of so much of what's going on,now. So infantile, yet they claim to be "progressive"-they are regressive in their attitude, basically, just shitting in their diapers.Sorry,I'm sure St.Buckley would've expressed it more eloquently.I hear Obama's voice,I think "punk".But I'm just a rube
