On British Sailors

There is an interesting conversation over at BlackFive with both criticism and defense of the British Sailors that were taken hostage by Iran.

I've argued that the "good little girl scout" Rules of Engagement are to blame for both the capture, and ultimately the actions of the sailors.

But, everyone involved in the conversation here is American. I like to know what the British take on this is.

  1. You don't want guys getting killed or tortured for nothing, but jeez, you don't want them captured because they didn't even fight!

This was an act of WAR by Iran against Britain. And nobody seems to be noticing. What is it going to take? Another massacre?

How long do you suppose it'll be before the next lot are snatched?

  2. I'm an Aussie, does that count for an outside perspective? I think the whole thing was fishy from go to whoah. Firstly, why was the British mothership instructed not to fight when the Marines were being taken hostage? Military tradition has it that you always, without exception, fight for your 'mates'. And second, why did Iran do it and why give up so quickly and easily? Rumours are that a deal was struck to bail the UK out with several key Iranian prisoners released.

  3. Hi dee...welcome!

    Yes, the whole things stinks.

The entire Rules of Engagement for this war are an outrage. Basically it's run by committee:

    1) Any "unauthorized" shooting by a Coalition soldier will be investigated and the perpetrater prosecuted.

    2) Enemy combatants will be accorded all the rights and privileges, courtesy and deference due to diplomats.

There's a recipe for military success. Oh, God. Don't get me started!!!
