...But that the environment is such that Muslims would dare suggest such a thing in public, or that any government official would dignify it with discussion is too...well...French. My God, what is going ON over there?

Evil simply does not appear on their radar. They are incapable of acknowledging its existence. So, of course, are incapable of confronting it.
